My name is Luca and I’m an Italian OPTCG enthusiast.
Oh, wait, every good intro starts with a quote, right? So here you go:
“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” A. Einstein
Actually, I want this intro to be a really good one, so have another lol
“If you want to learn something, read about it. If you want to understand something, write about it. If you want to master something, teach it.” Yogi Bhajan
That’s the vibe I’m approaching this with. I think I’ve learned and understood plenty, now it’s time to hopefully master it (teaching can wait a bit tho lol).
There are three main reasons I’ve decided to open this (sort of) blog:
- (The cover-up) I really enjoy this game and want other newbies to fall in love with it through the easiest hook: helping them win
- (The other cover-up) I want to spark some debate among mid-high level players on how to optimize plays and become better competitively
- (The true reason) I want to prove to myself that I can stick and commit to a side project without dropping it after a couple of weeks
In card games I generally enjoy tempo/aggro strategies, so this is mostly what I will write about, but I plan to discuss both the fundamentals and the current meta of the game.
I started playing around OP10, but OP is not my first TCG: I was an avid Hearthstone player for 5 years (from GvG to Scholomance) with around 10 Legend finishes.
While this experience gives me an edge, I don’t consider myself above average, and I strive to get better.
Here’s a screenshot of my hand-tracked IRL match history since I started playing (yeah, I’m a bit of a stat nerd):
Bear in mind that 3/4 of these were played at locals/small events (hence the high winrate), and the biggest event I attended was only a 128-player cap one. My goal from the next expansion onward is to attend a regional (if I ever manage to enter one without resorting to a bot, goddamn) and get a good top placement.
That’s it. I hope I can share what I’ve learned in a way that’s actually useful to you, and grow as a player along the way by putting it into words. See you in the next round!
